| Bill
Steer is back! The legendary master of six-string diversity has returned
with a surprising and refreshing new twist. Creator of the classic grind
sound that influenced a whole generation of extreme metal with Birmingham's
Napalm Death on their pioneering 1987 debut album, 'Scum', a record which
was to change forever, the concept of music as we once knew it! Bill quickly
became a cult legend, aside from playing on the FETO album & Mentally Murdered
EP with Napalm Death, he was also responsible for forming the legendary
Gods Of Gore - Carcass Following a series of legal wrangles and record company hassles, the corpse of Carcass was laid to rest - never to be exhumed. For the past five or so years Bill has remained in relative obscurity, with the occasional rumour of a 'new band' circulating on the scene. In fact Mr. Steer has been working hard on several projects which never eventually saw the light of day. Bill Steer explains, "I was really excited by the material I was coming up with, but I just couldn't find the right musicians for the job - this is why I eventually approached Leo (Cathedral) & Ludwig (Spiritual Beggars), 'cos they are both musicians that I really admire." As was slightly recognisable on the last two Carcass albums a more melodic Lizzy-esque approach was sneaking into the gore metal sound. Now Bill has taken his 70's influences even further. The grind has been replaced by groove, and noticeable influences in the playing can be likened to Leslie West (Mountain), Johnny Winter, Grand Funk Railroad, Cream, Free & Humble Pie! Fans of extreme Grind are, without doubt, going to be in for a surprise when they hear Firebird, an album which goes back to the very roots of blues/hard rock, creating a sound altogether more pure and convincing than a lot of today's acts who fall under the 'stoner rock' banner. Bill Steer (ex-Carcass) + Ludwig Witt (Spiritual Beggars) + Leo Smee (Cathedral) = FIREBIRD |
