| Remember,
how it felt the first time you heard a song on the radio and went straight
to the record store to find out more about it because you just had to have
the song. Well, you just HAVE to have the Spiritual Beggars album, 'Ad Astra'.
It is that stunning. Spiritual Beggars are a band that defy musical boundaries and one that can no longer be categorised as a 'stoner' band. There are far more influences than Black Sabbath within their music. They are throwbacks from the Deep Purple, Rainbow and Mountain era, when music was played for the pure love of it rather than for its commercial value. They do not thrive on following trends or have an image to conceal the fact that they are not competent musicians. Mike Amott's precision playing and his ability to construct songs of sheer and utter quality place him as one of the most respected guitarists in the world today. This, coupled with the uniquely talented vocals of singer Spice, makes the impact of the record that much more astounding. It takes years to craft perfect art and in the case of Spiritual Beggars; it has been well worth the eighteen month wait. With the addition of Per Wiberg, integrated as a full time member of the band, the headbanging, Hammond Organ ivory tinkler has added an epic dimension to the sound of 'Ad Astra'. Opening track 'Left Brain Ambassadors' immediately illustrates the depth and aura of this masterpiece. From the epic, 'Angel Of Betrayal' to the harmonious and rather magnificent hit song, 'Per Aspera, Ad Astra', Spiritual Beggars immerse the listener into an inescapable, never ending, cathartic journey that teases all of the senses. Consistent with their previous record, 'Mantra III', Spiritual Beggars recorded 'Ad Astra' at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden, with producer Fredrik Nordström (Opeth, At The Gates, Candlemass). The imagery of the band and their logo, taken from the Sanskrit symbol meaning 'Peace and Harmony through music' epitomises all that is Spiritual Beggars. They even had the sense to call their new album 'Ad Astra' which means 'to the stars'. With such a fine album to their name, we can credit Spiritual Beggars with nothing less than universal success. |
